The University of Cincinnati utilized a goal from Jae Atkinson to defeat Cornell, 1-0, in Bridgeport, Conn. With the win, the Bearcats have won two-straight matches.
UC (3-6-0) and the Big Red (4-2-1) battled back-and-forth in the first half as each tallied five shots with Cincinnati having three on net to Cornell's two. But junior Jae Atkinson was the difference in the match on Friday night.
In the 18th minute, the junior setup for a corner kick, and to everyone's shock, Atkinson bent the corner into the back of the goal to give UC a 1-0 lead. The goal was Atkinson's second of the season, and it gives her the team lead in points with six (2g-2a).
Cincinnati carried the one-goal lead into halftime and came out fierce in the second half looking to extend their lead.
It was all UC in the second half as they tallied eight shots to Cornell's three.
Redshirt freshman Natalie Smith recorded her second win of the year along with garnering her first career shutout.
The Bearcats return to action on Sunday as they travel to Providence, Conn. to face the Friars. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
