CINCINNATI -The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team was unable to overcome a first-half goal and fell to rival Xavier, 1-0, on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats fell to 2-5-1 on the year, while the Musketeers improved to 3-4-1.
After a bit of slow play early, Xavier found the back of the net in the 35th minute when Will Walker dumped a pass to Andrew Jordan on the far side, who then beat UC keeper Alex Gill(Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) low to the near side.
The margin would hold up despite a 14-9 shot advantage for the Bearcats and a 7-1 advantage on corners. The match was incredibly physical, with a combined 38 fouls and eight cautions called.
Both keepers came up huge at various points the match. Gill made four saves, including three in the first half, while Xavier's Eric Osswald made five saves to earn the win.
Will Diebold (Coppel, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) put a pair of shots on net for the Bearcats, while Ashani Walker (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College), Miles Dale (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and Ben Keane(Mount Laurel, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) each had a shot on net. Dale and Keane each got their opportunities playing up on corner kicks.
The Bearcats will look to rebound as they conclude their four-game homestand with their second conference match on Saturday, Sept. 28, against UCF. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. at Gettler Stadium.
