CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati tennis team completed a successful first day at the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana with four individuals advancing through the winner's bracket in singles competition.

Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) won her opening match in the gold draw by defeating Meika Ashby of Western Michigan by scores of 7-6(5) and 6-3. Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) also advanced in the gold bracket thanks to a come-from-behind win. After dropping the opening set 6-2 the sophomore came back to take the second set 6-2 before winning a third-set tiebreaker by a 7-4 score. The bracket sets up for the pair to face off in the finals.

Both freshmen advanced in the green draw in Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) and Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome). Bure also used a comeback effort to defeat Mariya Toncheva of Eastern Michigan. Bure dropped the opening set 6-1 and then came back to win the second 7-6(4) before capping it with a third-set tiebreaker victory 1-0(6). The green bracket also sets up for the pair to square off in the finals.

Hanna Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) and Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School/Stetson University) each competed in the singles round robin draw picking up victories. Sullivan defeated Mary Beth King of host Indiana by sores of 6-3 and 6-4. Wille knocked off Zsofia Biro of Eastern Michigan by scores of 6-1, 1-6, 1-0(10-3).

Carly Wilson (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) and Wille teamed up in the doubles round robin to defeat Livia Cirnu and Riley Nizzi of Kent State by a score of 8-6.

All play at the Hoosier Classic will continue Saturday and Sunday.
