CINCINNATI -The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team saw its rally fall short and dropped a 2-1 decision to UCF on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Gettler Stadium. The loss dropped the Bearcats to 2-6-1 and 0-2 in American Athletic Conference action, while the Knights improved to 3-4-2, 1-1 in American play.
Neither team registered a shot on goal in the first half, however the Knights did hit the post twice in the frame. Romario Williams had UC keeper Alex Gill (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) beat in the 27th minute, but the english on the ball caused it to hit the far post and deflect out-of-bounds for a goal kick. Leon Carby followed up four minutes later by drilling the crossbar.
The second half quickly proved to be a different story, as UCF was able to net two goals in the first seven minutes of the period.
The first came when Omar Vallejo took a feed from Fernando Laverde, via Matthew Gaskins, and found the back of the net in the 50th minute. Just over two minutes later, Gaskins and Vallejo combined to find Romario Williams, who converted for the second goal.
The Bearcats would not go quietly. In the 54th minute, UC had its best scoring chance of the game when Matt Remaley (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) headed a corner kick just over the post. Just a few minutes later, Alan Rovira (Simi Valley, Calif./Simi Valley/Tyler JC) found himself alone in the 18', but couldn't convert.
UC cut into the lead in the 74th minute, when John Manga (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) was fouled in the box and earned a penalty kick. Ashani Walker (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College) took the kick and beat UCF keeper Zach Biggs.
Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring the Bearcats could find and provide the final margin of 2-1. Biggs made a save in earning the victory, while Gill made three saves in taking the defeat.
The Bearcats now embark on a three-game road swing, starting Wednesday, Oct. 2, with a trip to Cleveland State. The match is set for 7:30 p.m. at CSU's Krenzler Soccer Field.
