The University of Cincinnati goalkeeper Natalie Smith recorded a career-high 11 saves Thursday night versus Connecticut, but the Huskies edged the Bearcats, 1-0, in overtime.
On a night when offense was hard to come by, redshirt freshman Natalie Smith kept the Bearcats (7-9-1, 3-3-1 AAC) in the match. UC was only able to generate five shots on the night, while UConn tallied 22.
Three of Cincinnati's shots came in the first half with reigning American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Emily Elsbrock, tallying a team-high two.
Smith's goaltending duties came up big for UC in the final 20 minutes of regulation as she recorded six of her career-high 11 saves.
It wasn't until the 95th minute that UConn (10-6-0, 4-2-0 AAC) was able to fool Smith and net the game-winning goal. Stephanie Ribeiro blasted a high shot from 25 yards out, which was just out of Smith's reach, to give the Huskies the overtime victory.
With the win, UConn slips ahead of Cincinnati in the AAC standings. The Bearcats remain at 10 points, while the Huskies improve their point total to 12.
The Bearcats take a pair of days off before hopping back into action at Temple for their final regular season road match. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
