The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team started their weekend off on the right foot as they defeated Houston, 2-1, on Thursday night. Freshman Katy Couperus tallied a goal and an assist in the Bearcats victory.
Cincinnati came out hot versus the Cougars as they had 11 shots in the first half and garnered a 2-0 lead.
In the 27th minute, Couperus got her head on a Jae Atkinson corner kick and found the back of the net. The goal was Couperus' second of the year and gave UC a 1-0 lead.
The freshman founder herself on the other end of a goal as she assisted classmate Bailey Wilson in the 34th minute to put the Bearcats up 2-0.
It looked as if Cincinnati would carry the 2-0 lead into halftime, but Houston netted a goal in the 36th minute on a deflection off a UC defender.
Natalie Smith was given the nod in net for the sixth consecutive match and garnered her fifth win of the year. The redshirt freshman tallied four saves in 90 minutes of action.
The two battled back-and-forth in the second half, but neither found the back of the net. Houston tallied 12 shots while UC had seven.
"That was about as ugly as a win as you will see, but it's still a win," said head coach Neil Stafford. "We've won 5 out of our last 6 and already doubled our conference wins from last year. We will absolutely have to step it up vs SMU on Sunday."
The Bearcats take two days off before they take on SMU on Sunday. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. ET in Dallas, Texas.
