TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team fell victim to an offensive outburst by the University of South Florida and concluded its three-game road trip with a 4-1 loss to the Bulls.
The Bearcats (4-8-1, 0-4 American) found the back of the net first when Ashani Walker (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College) converted in the 25th minute. It was the fifth goal of the year for the junior, but would not be enough for UC.
"USF came out strong in the first half, but we did a good job of not giving up and early goal," said Head Coach Hylton Dayes. "We took an early lead on an excellent shot by Ashani."
The Bulls (4-2-4, 1-1-1 American) netted the equalizer in the 34th minute whe Stiven Salinas scored from eight years out off a cross from Edwin Moalosi. Moalosi was just getting warmed up. He converted to put USF on top just nine minutes later, taking a chip over the top from Duane Muckette. The Bulls took the 2-1 lead into the half.
Moalosi helped USF widen its lead in the 68th minute when he converted a penalty kick to make it 3-1. The Bulls added on just two minutes later when Wesley Charpie crossed it in to Gerardo Hernandez who converted for his first goal of the year.
For the match, USF outshot UC, 24-5, including a 12-4 advantage on net. UC keeper Alex Gill made eight saves in the effort, while his counterpart, USF's Brentton Muhammad made three saves to earn the win.
"We battled hard, but fatigue plus playing our third game in a row on the road was too much for us to overcome," Dayes added. "We look forward to getting home and preparing for SMU on Saturday."
The Bearcats return to the friendly confines of Gettler Stadium for another American Athletic Conference match on Saturday, Oct. 7, when they play host to SMU. The match, opening a four-game homestand, is set for 7:00 p.m.
