The University of Cincinnati women's basketball held visiting Kent State to just 17 points in the second half en route to a 65-46 win at Fifth Third Arena on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Alexis Durley (Houston, Texas/Andy Dekaney) paced the Bearcats with a career-high 18 points to garner the team's first win of the season.
The Bearcats (1-2) had a 32-29 lead at halftime, but went on a 22-5 run to open the second half to expand their lead. UC held the Golden Flashes to a 23.8 (5-for-21) shooting performance while blocking five shots and forcing 12 turnovers.
The Golden Flashes didn't have an answer for stopping Durley as the sophomore guard tallied 14 of her career-high 18 points on free throws. Durley was a perfect 14-for-14 from the charity stripe and set a school record for free throw percentage.
As a team, Cincinnati took advantage of its free throw opportunities making 26 of its 32 chances (81.3%) while Kent State went 54.5 (12-for-22) from the line.
Alyesha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) and Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) also reached double-digit scoring for the Bearcats. Lovett recorded 12 points going 5-for-10 from the field, while Cook added 11 and went 2-for-4 from three-point range.
For the second consecutive game, UC won the battle of the boards by outrebounding KSU, 42-33. Jeanise Randolph (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional North) led the team with six boards and also had three blocks, which moves her to seventh on UC's career blocks list with 55. Randolph surpassed Asa Odeus (1989-90) and Joy Roberts (1980-83), who each had 54.
Cincinnati looks to build off this win next Thursday as they welcome No. 18/22 Iowa State to Fifth Third Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., and tickets are available by visiting CATSTIX.com or calling 1-877-CATS-TIX.
