LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team lost its final road match of the season 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-22) to the University of Louisville on Friday evening at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.
Junior Madi Lang (Commerce Township, Mich./Florida Atlantic) who was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll on Nov. 18., dished out 18 assists in the match for the Bearcats.
Collectively, Cincinnati out-blocked Louisville 5.0 to 3.0 with Lang, junior Me'Ashah Nicholson (Shiloh, Ill./Belleville Althoff) and freshman Breanna Barksdale (Chula Vista, Calilf./Eastlake) each tallying two blocks in the match.
The Bearcats fought with the Cardinals through the beginning of the first set but ultimately fell short, 25-12. After falling behind 4-1, Cincinnati pushed to get within 7-6 on the scoreboard. A block by Lang and Barksdale and a solo block by freshman Ciara Hill (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) pulled the Bearcats to within a point, but the Cardinals responded, scoring 11 of the next 12 points and pull ahead 18-7. Louisville finished off the set with a 25-12 score to earn a 1-0 match lead.
UC entered the intermission with a 2-0 deficit in the match after dropping the second set 25-15. Barksdale had three kills in the stanza and freshman Mallory Blauser (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock Christian Academy) added a couple while Lang dished out seven assists.
Cincinnati found some momentum in the third game, storming out of the break to score four straight points to open the set. Blauser contributed a kill and a service ace during the run for UC. The Cardinals closed the gap, and eventually took the lead at 8-7, but the Bearcats were still not finished. With UofL serving and up 24-20, UC scored two straight points on a kill by Wegman and a Cardinal attacking error to thwart two match points before the Cardinals finished the game at 25-22.
The Bearcats will close out their 2013 campaign against Rutgers and Connecticut on Nov. 27 and Nov. 29 in Fifth Third Arena. UC will play The Scarlet Knights at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and will host the Huskies at noon on Friday.
