The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team battled with Rutgers in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament, but the Scarlet Knights edged the Bearcats, 2-1, in double overtime. Jae Atkinson scored on a penalty kick in the second half to force extra time.
The Bearcats found their backs against the wall early as Rutgers took a lead in the 13th minute. Jonelle Filigno corralled a ball that was rattling around in the UC box and dribbled a shot to the far corner of the net.
The Scarlet Knights outshot Cincinnati, 6-3, in the first half, but the Bearcats came out firing in the second half and worked themselves back into the match.
UC held a commanding 9-4 shot advantage over RU, but it wasn't until the 79th minute that the Bearcats netted an equalizer, which came off a penalty kick.
Cincinnati was putting pressure on the backline with under 15 minutes to play when a UC player was fouled in the 18-yard box. Atkinson stepped up for the Bearcats to drive home the penalty kick and knot the match up at 1-1.
Overtime followed, and UC took control again as they generated three corner kicks. The Scarlet Knights held strong against the Bearcats' lethal set pieces to force a second 10-minute overtime.
Play was back-and-forth in the second overtime until the Scarlet Knights scored on a 35-yard blast from Rachel Cole with 16 seconds remaining.
The late golden goal advances Rutgers to the semifinals of the AAC Tournament, while the Bearcats first season under head coach Neil Stafford comes to an end.
Cincinnati finishes the season with a record of 8-11-1 and 4-4-1 in AAC action. Stafford's squad, which had six freshmen in the starting lineup, was predicted to finish ninth in the league, but UC surprised all and placed sixth, despite being tied for third entering the final weekend of regular season play. The Bearcats graduate three players from this year's squad: Emily Elsbrock, Katie Greer and Kate Schmidt.
