CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati swimming and diving teams scored a sweep of Wright State for senior day on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Keating Aquatics Center. Competing in their penultimate meet of the regular season, the women downed the Raiders, 159-121, while the men were victorious, 157-138.
The Bearcats took both 200 yard medley relays to open the meet. Jessica Piper, Helena Pikhartova, Iuliia Fedoreeva and Sammie Wheeler won on the women's side (1:48.31), while Joe Scherpenberg, Dan Gilbertson, Adam Monk and Mike Kaplanwon for the men (1:35.09).
Individual action kicked off with Hope Andrews taking a win in the mile, posting a time of 17:31.94. That was followed by Joey Ferreriwinning the men's 500 freestyle in 4:39.51.
Freestyle action continued with Jackie Keire breaking a nearly eight-year old school record in the 200. The freshman posted a time of 1:49.43, taking down Kristen Brown's 2006 time by roughly half a second. The Bearcats went one-two-three in the men's 200 freestyle, led by Connor Davis (1:42.71) and followed by Kaplan and Tommy Easley.
Backstroke action kicked off with Piper winning the 100 with a mark of 58.08. Miranda Hampton followed in second and Kendra Biermanwas in third. Scherpenberg led UC with a second-place finish in the 100 back.
The 100 breaststroke saw Wheeler get a win in the final home meet of her career, touching the wall in 1:05.88. She edged Pikhartova, who finished second with a mark of 1:06.34. Gilbertson was the quickest on the men's side, placing second in 59.12.
Fedoreeva won the 200 butterfly in 2:10.37, with UC's Emma Gresserin second. The men's 200 fly saw Ferreri win his second event of the day with a time of 1:55.45.
The sprints saw another senior day individual win for the women, with Weronika Wasiakowskawinning with a 50 free time of 24.23. Palleros placed second for the men, with a time of 21.57 that was just two-hundredths of a second behind Wright State's Luke Osgood.
The 100 freestyle saw Keire pick-up another win with a time of 51.28. Dean Waitewas the top finisher for the men in the 100 free with a time of 47.04 that was good for second.
Piper continued her strong day in the backstroke, winning the 200 with a mark of 2:05.82. She was followed by Hampton in second and Bierman in third. The men's 20 back saw Kearns and Awse Ma'ayago one-two, with Kearns posting a first-place time of 1:54.93 and Ma'aya following in 1:55.35.
The 200 breaststroke saw Pikhartova win after touching in 2:23.97. Nik Balmerearned second-place points for the men with a time of 2:09.10.
The return to distance freestyle saw Keire win the 500 with a time of 5:00.41. Ferreri won the men's mile in 16:17.49, with Joe Bottright behind him in second thanks to a time of 16:20.97.
The 100 butterfly saw Fedoreeva with the fastest time of 59.00, while Ma'aya was quickest for the men in 51.78.
The 200 individual medley saw Wheeler cap senior day with another first-place finish. She touched the wall in 2:09.25. Hunter Pasekwas quickest for the men with a mark of 1:57.20.
The 200 freestyle relay was capped with wins for both the women and men. Wasiakowska, Wheeler, Keire and Pikhartova won for the women with a time of 1:36.60. Scherpenberg, Kaplan, Palleros and Waite went the quickest in 1:25.24.
Diving action saw Chloe Merriss lead the women on the one-meter with a score of 209.25. Bill Magill led the men on the one-meter with a score of 229.55. The three-meter saw Amanda Coffey as the top UC woman (236.95) and Jimmy McMahonas the top male (254.50).
The Bearcats will head to Kentucky for their final regular season meet on Saturday, Feb. 1. The meet is set for Noon. After that, UC heads to the American Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships in Louisville, Ky. The league meet will be held Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 19-22.
