OXFORD, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams both fell in a dual meet at Miami (Ohio) on Thursday, Jan. 9. The women's team fell, 177-119, while the men's team was defeated, 162-134.
Women's
Women's action started with the Bearcat team of Kendra Bierman, Helena Pikhartova, Iuliia Fedoreeva and Weronika Wasiakowska scored a victory in the 200 medley relay. They finished in 1:47.46, just ahead of the RedHawks. Jessica Piper, Sammie Wheeler, Miranda Hampton and Sally Thompson placed third in 1:50.13.
Individual action kicked off with Hope Andrews placing second in the 1000 freestyle. She touched in 10:20.98, four seconds behind Miami's Stephanie Pearce.
Jackie Keire followed with her first victory of the day, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:51.71.
The 100 backstroke followed with Bierman as the top finisher in fourth place at 58.96. Wheeler was then the top finisher in the 100 breaststroke, finishing third with a time of 1:06.16.
Fedoreeva earned a second place finish in the 200 butterfly, clocking in at 2:07.53. Wasiakowska then finished fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.57.
The Bearcats then won consecutive women's races when Keire won the 100 frestyle and Piper won the 200 backstroke. Keire touched in 51.01 to win by over a second, while Piper clocked in 2:04.08. Hampton joined Piper with a top-three finish in the 200 backstroke, finishing third with a time of 2:07.47.
Keire picked up her third victory of the meet in the 500 free, posting a time of 4:57.91. Andrews was third in the race in 5:04.42.
Fedoreeva, Hampton and Emma Gresser placed second, third and fourth, respectively in the 100 butterfly. Fedoreeva finished in 58.53, followed by Hampton in 1:00.00 and Gresser in 1:00.68.
Individual action capped with Wheeler winning the 200 individual medley in 2:06.73.
The Bearcat team of Keire, Thompson, Fedoreeva and Wasiakowska placed second in the 200 freestyle relay to cap the swimming action, touching the wall in 1:38.07.
On the board, Amanda Coffey was UC's top performer on the one-meter. She scored 211.27 to finish fourth. Chloe Merris was the top Bearcat on the three-meter, using a score of 224.09 to place fourth.
Men's
Men's action got underway with Awse Ma'aya, Dan Gilbertson, Rob Walsh and Joe Scherpenberg placing second in the 200 medley relay (1:35.96).
The first individual event of the day saw Donovan Kearns finish second in the 1,000 freestyle with at time of 9:43.85. Connor Davis was the top Bearcat in the next event, the 200 freestyle, finishing fourth in 1:44.75.
The 100 backstroke saw Ma'aya finish third in 53.30, while Trenton Harper was second as the top UC finisher in the 100 breaststroke in 59.35.
Joey Ferreri placed third in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:54.93, while Michael Palleros was the fast Bearcat in the 50 free, placing third in 22.01.
The 100 free saw Palleros earn a second place finish in 47.70 before Kearns brought home the first men's victory of the day in the 200 backstroke. He finished in 1:53.68.
Nik Balmer had the quickest 200 breaststroke for UC, finishing in 2:09.81, while Ferreri was the fastest Bearcat in the 500 freestyle in 4:42.18. The 100 butterfly saw Ma'aya score a victory in 52.49, followed by Tyler Roeher finishing quickest for UC in the 200 individual medley (1:58.15).
The team of Walsh, Scherpenberg, Palleros and Michael Kaplan capped the day with a second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, touching the wall in 1:26.89.
Bill Magill was the top performer on the one-meter board for UC. He finished fourth with a score of 256.64. Jimmy McMahon was the top Bearcat on the three-meter board with a score of 251.55.
Next Meet
The Bearcats face a quick turnaround as they travel to Louisville on Saturday, Jan. 11. Both squads will face the host Cardinals, while the women's team will also square off with Houston.
