NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team dropped its season opener at No. 11 Notre Dame, 25-1, on Wednesday night in South Bend. The Bearcats lone goal came on a free position from senior Megan Bell (Parkton, Md./Hereford).
"Opening with the No. 11 team in the country is a tremendous challenge," head coach Gina Oliversaid. "We look forward to making some adjustments and competing next weekend in Florida."
The Irish came out firing in the lid-lifter, finding the back of the cage 14 times in the first half. Rachel Sexton scored four goals for Notre Dame, while Cortney Fortunato and Grace Muller each added a hat trick.
UC goalies Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) and Jennifer Walsh (Great Falls, Va./Langley) combined to make six saves. The two rotated throughout the contest.
Bell scored the free position goal in the second half on her second shot of the game. Taylor Young (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) also registered a shot on goal for the Bearcats.
Oliver's squad will return to action on Friday, Feb. 21, at Stetson. The Bearcats follow that up with a trip to Florida on Sunday, Feb. 23, to reach the halfway point of their season-opening six-game homestand.
