LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving programs wrapped up competition at the inaugural American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the University of Louisville's Ralph Wright Natatorium.
As has been the case throughout the week, freshman Jackie Keire provided the highlight of the day. While she did not quite manage to bring home her third conference title, she did post a second place finish in the 100 freestyle. Her finals time of 48.92 was less than half-a-second off the winner, Louisville's Kelsi Worrrell, and was also quick enough that it would have qualified for last season's NCAA Championships.
The day started with a total of three Bearcats earning top-five finishes in the 1,650 freestyle. Hope Andrews placed fifth for the women, swimming a finals time of 16:51.41. On the men's side, Joey Ferreri and Joe Bott placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Ferreri had an evening swim of 15:48.59, while Bott swam the finals in 15:48.74.
The women's 200 backstroke followed, with Jessica Piper swimming a time of 2:01.16 in the morning preliminary session before her finals time of 1:59.33 was good for first place. Donovan Kearns reached the championship final of the men's 200 back thanks to a preliminary swim of 1:48.35. He followed with a 1:52.83 in the finals.
Helena Pikhartova posted a preliminary time of 2:14.98 in the 200 breaststroke before swimming the final in 2:14.33 to place sixth, a time that meets the NCAA B-Qualifying standard.
Hunter Pasek was the final Bearcat to reach an evening final, using a 200 butterfly preliminary time of 1:49.88 to reach the finals. He swam the evening heat in 1:50.50 to place seventh.
The meet-concluding 400 freestyle relay saw the women place third and the men place fourth. Keire, Weronika Wasiakowska, Pikhartova and Sammie Wheeler posted a time of 3:31.58 for the women, while Joe Scherpenberg, Mike Kaplan, Dean Waite and Rob Walsh placed fourth in 3:03.24.
The divers competed off the platform on the final day. Bill Magill was the top male for the Bearcats with a score of 184.45, while Amanda Coffey was tops for the women with a score of 164.30.
The women finished the meet in fifth place with 431 points. Louisville won the women's team title with 977 points. The men finished in fourth place with 535 points. The Cardinals also won the men's title with 1,072.5 points. Keire's individual titles in the 200 and 500 freestyle were the first for a Bearcats swimmer since 2012.
