GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Playing a top-15 team for the second time in three games this season, the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team fell at No. 7/5 Florida, 19-6, on Sunday, Feb. 23.
Megan Bell (Parkton, Md./Hereford) scored a pair of goals for the Bearcats (1-2), while also winning two draws and picking-up two ground balls. Michelle Platz (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Urusla/UMBC), Ashley Helmrath (Ellicott City, Md./Maryvale Preparatory), Courtney Curtis (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) and Dani Tunnell (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) also found the back of the cage. Helmrath and Curtis each added an assist.
The Gators (4-1) were led by four goals from Sam Darcangelo and a hat trick from Sammi Burgess. Mollie Stevens added a pair of goals. Burgess also contributed three assists in the victory. Darcangelo and Shannon Gilroy each won four draw controls.
Florida jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Bell got the Bearcats on the board. Curtis added her goal with 7:46 left in the first half, providing the 14-2 score Florida took into the locker room. Tunnell and Bell (from Helmrath) gave UC consecutive goals early in the second half, before Helmrath and Platz both found the back of the cage for UC, with Platz' goal providing the final margin of 19-6.
Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) started in the cage and made three saves. Jennifer Walsh (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) made four saves in relief. Florida's Cara Canington made the start and one save. She was spelled by Mary-Sean Wilcox who made four saves.
Head coach Gina Oliver's squad is halfway through its season-opening, six-game road trip. The Bearcats visit Niagara on Saturday, March 1, for a 3:00 p.m. showdown before visiting Winthrop (Friday, March 7) and Presbyterian (Sunday, March 9). Cincinnati opens its home schedule on Friday, March 16, versus Coastal Carolina.
