CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Ashley Helmrath delivered in triple overtime to give the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team a 10-9 victory over Winthrop, capping an eventful day that saw the contest relocated from Rock Hill, S.C., due to inclement weather.
The Bearcats (2-3) got a pair of goals each from Megan Bell (Parkton, Md./Hereford), Helmrath (Ellicott City, Md./Maryvale Preparatory) and Kelsey Conway (Laurel, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel). Michelle Platz (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula), Taylor Young (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and Torrie Zarella (Great Falls, Va./Langley) all added a goal, as well. Bell registered assists on three of the goals, while Courtney Curtis (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) assisted on one, as well.
The Eagles (2-2) were led by four goals from Jenna Kasmarik, while Hayley Krause scored twice. Shannon Gallagher added three assists in the effort.
Cincinnati jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the opening 10 minutes of the contest on goals from Zarella, Bell, Platz and Young. Winthrop rallied with three goals in the final 8:24 of the first half to tie the game at the break.
UC then built an 8-6 lead with 13:24 to play before Winthrop rallied to tie the game at nine with 6:02 remaining in the game. Neither team scored in the final six minutes of regulation. Neither team scored until Helmrath converted on a pass from Bell to win the game 27 seconds into the third extra period.
Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) made six saves to earn the victory in the cage. She made four saves in the second half and one in overtime. Winthrop's Camille King matched Gulmi's six saves while taking the loss.
The game was originally scheduled for Winthrop's Rock Hill campus, but heavy rains rendered the field unplayable. The game was moved to an artificial surface in Charlotte, N.C., and started two hours later than schedule. It marks the third time in five games the Bearcats have had a game delayed by weather, with games at Stetson and Florida facing weather issues as well.
Head coach Gina Oliver's squad will look to keep the momentum going on Sunday, March 9, when they visit Presbyterian for a 1:00 p.m. ET showdown.
