CINCINNATI - After helping the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team to a pair of victories last week, sophomore goalie Meg Gulmi has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.

"Meg is a true competitor," said head coach Gina Oliver. "She's had a tough start to her sophomore season, but has found her confidence and is back to being Meg. She had a huge save in the overtime versus Winthrop that eventually led to a possession to win the game. I'm really happy for her and glad she's back in the zone."

Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) posted a .542 save percentage and 6.64 goals against average last week as the Bearcats beat Winthrop, 10-9 in overtime, and Presbyterian, 16-6. It improved her to 3-3 on the season as UC's starting goalie.

Against the Eagles, Gulmi made six saves, including four in the second half and one in overtime, to help the Bearcats earn the victory. She followed that up with seven first-half saves to help the Bearcats build a 12-2 halftime lead at Presbyterian, en route to a 16-6 victory.

Gulmi is the second UC player to earn a conference weekly award this season. Megan Bell was named Offensive Player of the Week on February 25.

Oliver, Gulmi and the Bearcats open the home portion of their 2014 schedule this Friday, March 14, when Coastal Carolina visits for a 1:00 p.m. showdown at Gettler Stadium. That will be followed up a Sunday, March 16, visit from Iona at Noon.
