MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team had its five-game win streak snapped, 14-6, at the hands of Marquette on Friday night in the BIG EAST Conference opener.
The Bearcats (6-4, 0-1) were in the game at halftime, trailing just 5-3, but gave up nine second-half goals in the loss. The Golden Eagles (5-5, 1-0) picked up the victory in their first game as members of the BIG EAST.
Cincinnati was led by five goals from freshman Dani Tunnell (Frederick, Md./Oakdale), while junior Ashley Helmrath (Ellicott City, Md./Maryvale Prep) netted the other goal for the Bearcats.
Marquette got four goals apiece from Claire Costanza and Hayley Baas. Kenzie Brown had a hat trick. Costanza added three assists for a seven-point evening.
UC fell behind early, with Marquette netting the first four scores of the contest. The Bearcats responded by scoring the next three, first from Helmrath followed by a pair from Tunnell, to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Golden Eagles got the final score of the first half, providing the margin of 5-3 at the break.
After the Golden Eagles got the first two goals of the second half, Tunnell scored three two of the next three goals to cut the deficit to 7-4 with 22:25 remaining. The hosts managed to find another gear, outscoring UC, 6-1, over the final 20 minutes to secure the 14-6 victory.
Marquette held a 29-13 advantage in shots and a 19-9 edge in ground balls, but just a 12-10 lead in draw controls.
Cincinnati put only eight shots on the cage, with MU goalie Sarah Priem making two saves to earn the victory. Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) made six saves in taking the loss.
The Bearcats will look to rebound on Sunday, March 30, when they return home to host Oregon. Opening draw is set for Noon at Gettler Stadium.
