CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team gave up three homeruns and lost 7-2 to UConn on Saturday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium.
The Bearcats (14-19, 3-8 American Athletic Conference) used a season-high five pitchers in the game and gave up a combined 14 hits, seven runs and three homeruns. Starting pitcher Ryan Atkinson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) took the loss and fell to 4-2 on the year.
Senior Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) launched his second homerun of the year, and second of the series, over the right field fence in the bottom of the ninth inning to try to spark a comeback for the Bearcats. His shot was a no doubter and bounced off the side of Fifth Third Arena before falling to the ground.
UC's only other run came in the fifth inning when a double-play ball from sophomore Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) scored sophomore Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa/Fleetwood Area) from third.
Wenzel finished the game with two hits to lead Cincinnati. Glass, Clark, sophomore Forrest Perron (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) and freshman R.J. Thompson (Mason, Ohio/Mason) also collected a hit in the game.
The Huskies scored all of their runs in two big innings, notching four in the second inning and three in the eighth. A pair of two-run homeruns off Atkinson put the visitor's ahead 4-0 after the second inning.
In the eighth, a solo homerun from Blake Davey, the third of the day for UConn, gave the Huskies a 5-1 lead before they loaded the bases with only one out. A single and a groundout scored two more runs before the UC defense could end the frame.
Of note for the Bearcats was the relief appearance of redshirt junior Matt Ring (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) who has been out of the lineup since Feb. 28 with an injury. Ring pitched 2.0 innings of scoreless baseball and did not allow a hit or a walk while striking out two.
The Bearcats and Huskies will pay the rubber match of the series on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch from Marge Schott Stadium. The game will be the 300th game ever played in the Cincinnati facility and the first 300 fans through the gates will receive a voucher for four free tickets to an upcoming UC baseball game.
