THE GAMES
The University of Cincinnati women's lacrosse team returns home for its final three games of the regular season, starting with visits from BIG EAST foes Rutgers and UConn this weekend. Both games will be a part of Social Media Weekend, with giveaways at the gate and trivia contests on the @UCLacrosse Twitter account. The Scarlet Knights visit on Thursday, April 17, for a showdown under the lights at the Sheakley Athletics Center. Opening draw is set for 6:00 p.m. and the game will serve as Cincinnati's annual Pink Out. The Huskies enter Sheakley on Saturday, April 19, for a Noon contest.
THE SERIES
Cincinnati and Rutgers will be playing for the sixth time, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 4-1 advantage in the series. RU took the first four meetings from 2009-12 before the Bearcats recorded their first-ever BIG EAST win against Rutgers, 9-8, a season ago at the Sheakley Athletics Center. Taylor Young (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) had a pair of goals in the game, while Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) made seven saves.
Cincinnati and UConn are meeting for the sixth time, with the Huskies having taken each of the previous five meetings, including both games in the Queen City. Last season, the Huskes won a 15-2 decision in Storrs, Conn., with Sarah Del Bene (Timonium, Md./Timonium) and Megan Bell (Parkton, Md./Hereford) netting the goals for UC and Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) making seven saves. Cincinnati assistant coach Lauren Gunning played at UConn from 2008-11.
SCOUTING THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
Rutgers enters with an even 7-7 mark overall and a 1-3 record in BIG EAST play. The Scarlet Knights are playing on the road for the first time since March 29, having dropped two-of-three home games thus far in April, sandwiching a 12-6 win over Marquette between losses to UConn and Georgetown. Lauren Sbrilli leads RU in scoring with 27 points (23 goals, four assists), while Kristin Kocher (17 goals, six assists) and Megan Clements (17 goals, four assists) have also eclipsed the 20-point mark. Amanda Currell has started 10 of the 14 games in the cage, posting a 4-6 record thanks to a 9.62 goals against average and .492 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
UConn enters having won six of its last seven games, with the lone defeat a 11-10 loss at the hands of Georgetown and the most recent contest an 11-10 win over Marquette. The Huskies are led offensively by a pair of 40+ point scorers in Lauren Kahn (27 goals, 21 assists) and Katherine Finkelston (36 goals, eight assists). Shannon Nee has started all 13 games in the cage, riding a 10.15 goals against average and .439 save percentage to an 8-5 record. UConn visits Louisville on Friday, April 17, before traveling up Interstate 71 to Cincinnati.
UP NEXT
The Bearcats conclude the 2014 slate on Saturday, April 26, with a visit from Georgetown. The Hoyas and UC are set for an opening draw of 2:00 p.m. on senior day for Cincinnati. The team will honor its senior class of Kelsey Conway (Laurel, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), Megan Knoop (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Jennifer Walsh (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Taylor Young (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore).
