CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team dropped a 17-6 decision to UConn on Saturday afternoon at the Sheakley Athletics Center. The Bearcats fell to 6-10 and 0-5 in the BIG EAST with one contest remaining, while the Huskies improved to 9-6 and 4-2 in the league.
Cincinnati got a pair of goals each from Courtney Curtis (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) and Michelle Platz (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula), while Dani Tunnell (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) registered a goal and an assist.
Kelsey Conway (Laurel, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) had a pair of helpers, while Sarah Del Bene (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) scored a goal and Ashley Helmrath (Ellicott City, Md./Maryvale Prep) contributed an assist.
UConn was led by five goals from Lauren Kahn and hat tricks from Kacey Pippitt and Alexandra Crofts. Jacqueline Jordan had two goals and two assists, while Katherine Finkelston posted a goal and two assists.
Things were relatively even during the early going, with Kahn opening the scoring for UConn before Platz answered for UC. After Pippitt scored consecutive goals, Pltaz scored again to cut it to 3-2 with 19:36 remaining.
The Huskies then scored the next four goals to build a 7-2 lead with 8:21 left. The teams traded goals for the duration of the first half, with UConn taking an 8-4 lead into the locker room.
UConn picked up the defense in the second half, forcing 13 Bearcats turnovers in the closing frame. The Huskies outscored Cincinnati, 9-2, in the second half to provide the final margin of 17-6.
For the game, UConn outshot the Bearcats 32-15. Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) did her best to keep Cincinnati in the game, making 13 saves. Shannon Nee earned the victory for UConn, making five saves in the first half before giving way to Marya Fratoni, who made three second-half saves.
Cincinnati has one game left on the 2014 slate, with Georgetown visiting the Sheakely Athletics Center on Saturday, April 26. Opening draw is set for Noon.
