CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team capped its 2014 season with a 20-5 loss to Georgetown on Saturday afternoon at the Sheakley Athletics Center.
The Bearcats (6-11, 0-7 BIG EAST) were led by a pair of goals each from Dani Tunnel (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) and Michelle Platz (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula). Taylor Young (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) added a goal, while Courtney Curtis (Mason, Ohio/Mason) and Elaina Enich (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) each had an assist.
The Hoyas (9-7, 6-1 BIG EAST) received hat tricks from Meghan Farrell, Hannah Franklin and Reilly Woodman. Franklin and Farrell each also had an assist for four-point afternoons. GU also got a pair of goals from Kelyn Freedman and Corinne Etchison, who both also contributed an assist apiece in the win.
Cincinnati kept things close in the early going. After Freedman opened the scoring, Tunnell responded just 24 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1. The Hoyas got the next three goals, but back-to-back scores from Platz and Young pulled UC back within a goal, 4-3, with 20:27 left in the first half.
Georgetown found another gear, scoring five-straight goals to close out the half and take a 10-3 lead into the locker room. Georgetown then outscored UC, 11-2, in the second half to reach the final margin of 20-5.
Meg Gulmi (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) took the loss in the cage, but made an outstanding 10 first-half saves before giving way to senior Jennifer Walsh (East Setauket, N.Y./East Setauket). The Hoyas split time in the cage, as well, with Maddy Fisher starting and making three saves to earn the victory.
The contest was senior day for the Bearcats, with the team honoring four seniors - Kelsey Conway (Laurel, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), Megan Knoop (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Young and Walsh, prior to the contest. The group helped UC to the best consecutive seasons in terms of win total in program history the past two seasons.
Conway leaves among the program's top-10 in career games played and starts, while Young ranks among the team's top-10 in career goals, ground balls, draw controls and turnovers.
