COLUMBUS, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati baseball team battled through five innings before falling 11-3 to Ohio State University on Tuesday night in Columbus. The Buckeyes scored seven runs between the fifth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach for Cincinnati.
Senior Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) hit an RBI-single in the second inning to extend his hit streak. The right fielder has now recorded at least one hit in 12 straight games, a new career high.
Cincinnati scored its three runs in the top of the second inning. After giving up four runs to open the game, the Bearcats responded with three consecutive RBI singles by senior Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), freshman Jake Richmond (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and Williams to cut the deficit to 4-3.
With the loss, UC falls to 22-28 on the season while starting pitcher Grant Walker (Brookeville, Ohio/Northmont) takes the loss to move to 2-6. The Buckeyes improve their record to 29-24.
OSU struck first, scoring four in the bottom of the first inning and taking advantage of a shaky performance by Walker. The Buckeyes scored their first run off a sacrifice fly, but a two-out fly ball that carried over the head of centerfielder Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) scored two more and broke the inning open for the home team. Back-to-back walks and a single scored another run before Walker was chased from the game and replaced by sophomore Colin Hawk (Beech Grove, Ind./Roncalli).
Ohio State broke open the game late, scoring seven runs between the fifth and the seventh innings for the decisive 11-3 margin. Hawk's day ended after 5.1 innings pitched with 10 hits and five runs allowed.
Sophomore Mitch Patishall (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) entered from the bullpen in the top of the seventh inning and notched five strikeouts in his short appearance.
The Bearcats will finish the regular season with three games at No. 5 University of Louisville later this week. The games will be played at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 6 p.m. on Friday, May 16 and 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17 from UofL's Jim Patterson Stadium.
