University of Cincinnati freshman Davis Baxter (Nolensville, Tenn./Ravenwood High School) is tied for ninth with three other players at even par 74-70=144 following the first two rounds of the Cardinal Intercollegiate on Monday at the University of Louisville Golf Club (par 72, 7,100 yards) in Simpsonville, Ky. Baxter was tied for 22nd place following a 2-over par 74 in the morning round but rallied in the afternoon, posting one of the tournament's top second-round scores at 2-under 70. Among his second-round highlights were three consecutive birdies (holes Nos. 2-4) and an eagle (hole No. 9) on the front nine. "He made a couple of mental errors in the first round but he hit a lot of good shots and played very well in the second round," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He's being very patient and trusts what he is doing. He has a great attitude about things." // Scores from other Bearcats Baxter was one of several Bearcats who improved as the day continued. Senior Baxter Reeves (Montgomery, Ala./Brewbaker Tech/Central Alabama CC) shaved two strokes off his morning score to moved up into a tie with eight players for 15th place at 2-over 74-72=146. Fellow senior John Michael O'Toole (Pinson, Ala./Pinson Valley High School/Central Alabama CC) jumped from a tie for 35th place to a tie for 26th at 4-over 75-73=148. Senior Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) is tied for 30th with six other players at 5-over 75-74=149. Junior Emerson Newsome (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek High School) is tied for 52nd with five other players at 8-over 76-76=152. Playing as an individual, sophomore Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) is tied for 40th with 11 other players at 7-over 78-73=151. // Team Standings The Bearcats climbed from a tie for eighth place in the morning into sixth place in the team standings at 11-over 298-289=587 following the second round. Louisiana Monroe leads the 16-team field at 4-over 292-288=580. Host Louisville is second at 5-over 292-289=581 followed by Austin Peay (6-over 293-289=582), Eastern Kentucky (9-over 290-295=585) and UT Martin (10-over 297-289=586). "We're starting to settle into what we need to be doing," Martin said. "You can tell by our scores we're close. We're trending in the right direction.
