CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team used a mid-second-half run to earn a 73-57 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday, in the season opener for both teams at Fifth Third Arena.

With only a four-point gap at the half, the second-half was a nip-and-tuck affair until UC used a 16-6 run over nearly six minutes that made a six-point lead in a 14-point edge, 55-39, with 8:16 to go.

Cincinnati (1-0) moved to 5-1 in season openers under Jamelle Elliott while UAPB (0-1) dropped its second straight matchup against the Bearcats. UC had 18 offensive rebounds, turning them into 15 points along with 28 points in the paint. The Bearcats had a commanding 55-34 edge on the glass.

Jasmine Whitfield (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) scored a game and career-high 24 points, hitting three triples and grabbing nine rebounds. Whitfield's previous career best was 16 against Rutgers last season.

Marley Hill (Cleveland, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) had her first career double-double, hitting a pair of career highs with 21 points and 18 rebounds. The 18 boards are the most in a game for a UC player since Jill Stephens finished with 22 against McNeese State on Nov. 21, 2007. Hill set her previous career best in the 2013-14 opener, scoring 16 and grabbing six boards against Northern Kentucky.

Makenzie Cann (Lawrenceburg, Ky./Anderson County) made her UC debut, hitting three three-pointers and pulling down six rebounds.

Destiny Brewton led UAPG with 11 points. Charisse Carr had 10 points and Jazmyne Victorian finished with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.

UC held a 33-29 edge at the half in a see-saw first half that saw four ties and four lead changes. The Bearcats jumped out to five and six-point leads on two occasions, but the Golden Lions used runs to square the game up. UC finally was able to get some daylight with a three from Cann, three free throws from Hill and a layup by Whitfield that made the halftime cushion four.

UC returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 19 with a road contest at Tennessee-Martin scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. ET tipoff. It starts a six-game road swing for the Bearcats who will not play another home game before facing crosstown rival Xavier on Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. inside Fifth Third Arena.
