Bearcats Take Early Lead, Fall 3-1 to Second-Place Owls

CINCINNATI
- The University of Cincinnati volleyball team jumped out to an early lead but ultimately fell 3-1 (25-20, 17-25, 24-26, 22-25) to Temple University on Sunday afternoon in Fifth Third Arena.

The Owls entered the match as the second-place team in the American Athletic Conference and winners of five-straight matches.

The middle blocker tandem of senior Me'Ashah Nicholson (Shiloh, Ill./Belleville Althoff) and freshman Cortnee Bowser (Kent, Ohio/Theodore Roosevelt) carried a majority of the weight for the Bearcats, tallying 14 and 12 kills, respectively.

// Notables
- With the loss, Cincinnati is now to 13-9 on the season and 5-7 in the American while Temple improves to 18-6 and 9-3.
- Senior Jamie Netisingha (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) collected a match-high 20 digs and has recorded double-digit digs in all but two matches this season. She also has surpassed the 20-dig mark on nine occasions this season.
- Junior Emma Roberson (Brooks, Ky./Evansville) added 12 kills and has now recorded double-digit kills in 17 of the last 18 matches.
- Bowser's 12 kills were a new career high for the freshman.
- Senior Madi Lang (Commerce Township, Mich./Florida Atlantic) finished with 36 assists and 13 digs for her second-consecutive double-double. She also added four kills and a block.

// Set Breakdown
Set 1: UC 25, TU 20
- Cincinnati opened the match with five-straight points behind a strong serve from junior Morgan Allred (Carrolton, Texas/Hebron). An ace from Allred, plus kills from Roberson and Bowser paced the Bearcats to a 5-0 lead.
- The Owls climbed back in to the game and took their first lead at 17-16 following a UC error.
- Cincinnati responded out of a timeout with five of the next six points, including kills by Allred, Roberson and Bowser, to go ahead 21-18.
- Cincinnati recorded the final two points of the game with a Netisingha service ace and a Nicholson kill for the 25-20 victory.
Set 2: TU 25, UC 17
- Temple used a service ace to pace itself to a 12-5 lead.
- The Bearcats attempted a comeback, getting to within 13-10 after back-to-back blocks by Bowser/Roberson and Bowser/sophomore Ciara Hill (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook).
- The Owls expanded the lead back to 22-15 and used a kill by Kirsten Overton to win the second game 25-17.
Set 3: TU 26, UC 24
- The teams played close until a four-point Temple run put the Owls ahead 13-10.
- A five-point run for the Owls expanded the lead to 21-15 after three straight errors by the Bearcats.
- Cincinnati responded with four consecutive points, including a kill and a block by Bowser, to get within 21-19.
- Kills by Bowser and Nicholson fended off two TU set points to tie the score at 24-24, but a UC service error and a kill by Temple's Jennifer Iacobini gave Temple the 26-24 win.
Set 4: TU 25, UC 22 - Cincinnati scored four straight points to go ahead 11-5 following kills from Bowser and Allred.
- Temple tied the game at 15-15 and took a 16-15 lead with back-to-back kills.
- A three-point TU run put the visitor's ahead 22-18, for what would become an insurmountable lead.
- Back-to-back kills by Nicholson pulled UC to within 24-22, but a Cincinnati blocking error gave Temple the win.

The Bearcats will head back out west for two conferences matches on Nov. 7 and Nov. 9. UC will play at Tulsa at 8 p.m. ET, on Friday before facing SMU in Dallas at 2 p.m. ET, on Sunday.
