CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team couldn't overcome a hot-shooting Iowa State squad Sunday afternoon, dropping an 85-54 contest to the Cyclones in Ames, Iowa.

// THE SHORT STORY:
The Bearcats battled tough through the first 20 minutes of the game, keeping the Iowa State lead to just 38-30 at the break, but the Cyclones found their shooting rhythm in the second half, hitting 8-of-17 three-pointers. An 8-0 spurt to open the second half, gave Iowa State a 16-point lead that UC would never cut down to fewer than 15 the rest of the way.

// KEY RUNS:

  • Iowa State used a quick 6-0 run that lasted just 1:20 late in first half to pull away and push the lead to 10, their largest to that point.
  • Cincinnati cut the ISU lead down to two at the 8:23 mark of the first half after a 9-3 scoring spurt was aided by a three from Makenzie Cann and free throws from Marley Hill and Ana Owens.
  • Iowa State added to their lead to start the second half, scoring eight points over the first one minutes and 48 seconds to push their lead to 16.
  • Another 8-0 run sealed the game for the Cyclones, making the score 76-47 with just over five minutes remaining

  • The Cyclones now lead the all-time series 2-0 with Iowa State taking wins in back-to-back season against the Bearcats.
  • After struggling form the free throw line during the first two games of the season, UC settled down, collecting points on 17-of-21 shots from the charity stripe. Cincinnati was just 27-of-46 from the line heading into today's contest.
  • Iowa State managed to pull away thanks to their inside game, recording 38 points in the paint compared to just 20 for the Bearcats. The Cyclones held a 42-37 edge in rebounding.
  • Cincinnati finished the game with a season-low 13 turnovers, but the Cyclones out-scored UC 21-12 in points off turnovers.


// INDIVIDUAL NOTES:

  • Ana Owens set a new career mark in scoring, totaling 13 points. The freshman now has double-digit points in two of her first three collegiate games. She also recorded her first career block.
  • Shelbi Chandler grabbed a season-best five rebounds.
  • Makenzie Cann added eight points on 2-of-3 shooting from three-point range. She is now 9-of-18 from deep range for the season.
  • Chelsea Jamison added a season-best eight points, shooting 3-of-7 from the field. She also grabbed six rebounds, giving her at least that many in each game this season.

// UP NEXT:
The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team will travel west for a pair of games in the Cal Classic. UC will face off with Creighton in the first game on Friday, Nov. 28 before facing either California or San Jose State the following day. UC will stay on the west coast to take on UCLA on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. CT/10 p.m. ET.
