Creighton Tops Cincinnati in Opening Game of Cal Classic

BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team dropped the opening game of the Cal Classic Friday evening to Creighton by a 63-52 score inside Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.

// THE SHORT STORY:
The Bearcats were out-rebounded 41-29 in the contest, including a 17-6 advantage for Creighton in offensive rebounds. The Bluejays took 12 more shots than UC and recorded a 13-6 edge in second-chance points.

// KEY RUNS:

  • The Bearcats answered an early three from Creighton with an 8-2 scoring spurt that gave UC a 10-5 lead at the 12:49 mark of the first half.
  • Creighton opened the second half on an 8-2 run that pushed their lead to 39-28 with 15:26 remaining.
  • Creighton exploded from three-point range late in the second half hitting four-straight three's to help a 16-2 run that spanned 4:24 seconds. Three different Bluejays hit threes in the span.
  • UC made a run late to get back in the game, scoring 10 unanswered points over a 2:53 span that ended at 4:06 left in the game. Whitfield and Cann connected on three's while Tarver added a jumper and Owens hit a pair of free throws.

  • Cincinnati recorded a season-high five blocks in the contest.
  • UC shot 38% or better from the field for the third time this season, finishing the game at 39.2 percent.
  • The 29 rebounds in the contest are the lowest for UC in a game this season.
  • The Bearcats recorded a season high in steals with eight.
  • Cincinnati finished the game shooting 33.3 percent from three-point range. UC has shot at that clip or above in three of the first four games this season.

// INDIVIDUAL NOTES:

  • Brandey Tarver recorded her first career double-digit scoring effort with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and going 3-of-3 from the free throw line. The sophomore guard also recorded three blocks in the contest, the first three in her career.
  • Jasmine Whitfield led the Bearcats in scoring with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting. It marks the third time this season and the eighth time in her career she has reached double digits in scoring. She has also led the team in scoring in three of four games this year.
  • Ana Owens and Makenzie Cann each went 1-of-1 from behind the three-point line in the contest. Each of the true freshmen have recorded at least one three in each game this season.
  • Makenzie Cann added one three to her team-best total of 10 this season. For the year she is now 10-of-17 for a .588 shooting percentage.

The University of Cincinnati will now play in the Cal Classic consolation game Saturday, Nov. 29, facing off with San Jose State who fell to #14 Cal 110-87. Creighton advanced to the championship game to face Cal.
