The University of Cincinnati track & field programs began the 2014-15 season this past weekend with its annual Black vs. Red Intrasquad Meet in The Armory-Fieldhouse on the 175-meter flat track. Team Black edged out Team Red, 112-97.
The women's team served as the catalyst for Team Black as they won nine of the 12 events. Rebecka Abrahamsson and Frida Akerstrom headed the charge for Team Black as each individual won two events and also set new intrasquad records.
Abrahamsson won triple jump with a hop, skip and a jump of 39' 1.25", which broke the previous meet record set by Shintara Carpenter in 2006 by just over an inch. The freshman from Sweden also won long jump with a leap of 17' 9.5".
Akerstrom, who is also a Swedish native, broke her own meet record in the shot put with a hurl of 49' 11.25", which bested her previous record set in 2012 by three inches. The fifth-year senior also won the weight throw with a throw of 57 feet.
Records were also being set for the women of Team Red as Kenya Woodall tied the 200-meter dash record. The school record holder in the indoor and outdoor 400-meter dash crossed the line at 25.0 to tie Natasha Burse's meet record set in 2012. Woodall also took home the 55-meter dash crown.
The men's side seemed more balanced as Team Red and Team Black split events, 6-6, but they also had some record breaking performances.
Michael Nwankwo, who represented Team Black, and Macklin Tudor, who represented Team Red, broke their own meets records. Nwankwo bested his triple jump record of 48' 4.5", which he set last season, by leaping 49' 9". Tudor shattered his shot put record form last season by three and a half feet with a throw of 59' 0.75".
Another good performance came from the long jump as freshman Sergio Acera Villanueva leapt 23' 8.25", which would have been UC's best jump last season.
UC also had strong performances in the high jump as four student-athletes cleared 6' 6.5" with freshman Alex Bloom winning the event on attempts.
The Bearcats' first meet of the season is Friday, Dec. 12 in Bloomington, Indiana as they compete at the Hoosier Open.
