KINGSTON, R.I.
- Junior Morgan Allred (Carrolton, Texas/Hebron) tied a career high with 22 kills as the University of Cincinnati volleyball team beat previously undefeated University of Rhode Island 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 26-24, 25-16) in the second match of the Art Carmichael Invitational in Kingston, R.I.

The Bearcats picked up their second win of the day as they topped URI who entered the match with a perfect 8-0 record. The Rams has only lost four sets all season before matching up with the Bearcats.

Allred took control of the match in the second set and compiled 22 kills, tying her previous career high set on Oct. 25, 2013 vs. UConn.

  • With the win, Cincinnati improves to 5-3 on the season while Rhode Island falls to 8-1.
  • In addition to Allred, junior Emma Roberson (Brooks, Ky./Evansville) recorded double-digit kills with 15. It was her fifth match of the season with double-digit scoring.
  • Freshman Macie Pifer (Euclid, Ohio/Beaumont) notched a career-high 18 digs.
  • Senior Jamie Netisingha (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) dished out a career-high eight assists.
  • Sophomore Ciara Hill (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) had a career-high 14 digs.
  • Redshirt junior Caitlin Ogletree (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery) recorded her second-consecutive double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs.
  • The Bearcats and the Rams each totaled 60 kills but UC only hit 15 attacking errors compared to 23 from URI.
  • Cincinnati recorded six service aces to set a new season high.

"We played a really great Rhode Island team tonight that reminded me a lot of Appalachian State" head coach Molly Alvey said. "I am really proud of the way Morgan Allred played tonight, she took some big offensive swings for us. Once again, Jamie Netisingha played an amazing match and really controlled the backcourt for us. Lindsey Dinkelacker and Macie Pifer also came up with some big plays. Every single play builds confidence in this group."

// Set Breakdown
Set 1: UC 25, URI 22

  • The Bearcats broke a 3-3 tie with a kill by junior Emma Roberson (Brooks, Ky./Evansville) and an attacking error by URI for a 5-3 lead early in the game.
  • Rhode Island went from 13-11 down to ahead 16-13 following three kills, a block, an ace and a UC error.
  • The Rams lead held at 21-18 until the Bearcats scored three straight points to put the set in a 21-21 tie and force a URI timeout. Kills by Allred and Hill plus a URI attacking error lifted the Bearcats.
  • The Bearcats closed out the set with a kill by Allred and a service ace by senior Me'Ashah Nicholson (Shiloh, Ill./Belleville Althoff) to win 25-22.
  • The set victory for the Bearcats was just the fourth set of the season that the Rams had lost.
  • Roberson led all players with five kills while Allred added four in the set.
Set 2: URI 25, UC 23

  • URI scored seven of nine points to surge ahead 18-12. The Rams used six kills during the span.
  • Facing a 22-15 deficit, the Bearcats were paced by three straight kills from Allred to cut the margin to 22-18 and force URI into a timeout call.
  • The Bearcats scored four of the next five points, including two more Allred kills, to get within 23-22.
  • Allred tallied one more kill, her 10th of the game, but a kill by URI's Franki Darnold gave the Rams the 25-23 win to even the match score at 1-1.

Set 3: UC 26, URI 24

  • Rhode Island called an early timeout after a kill by Roberson and a block by Nicholson and Hill put Cincinnati ahead 10-6.
  • Two blocks and a Hill service ace highlighted a four-point run to increase the UC lead to 14-7.
  • Three kills and a UC attacking error brought the Rams to within a point at 19-18.
  • Rhode Island climbed ahead 22-20 with another run of four straight points.
  • Head Coach Molly Alvey called a timeout with her team facing a Rams' set point at 24-22. The Bearcats stormed out of the timeout with kills by Nicholson and Allred (two) to take back the lead at 25-24.
  • A URI timeout couldn't stop the Bearcats' momentum and another kill by Nicholson gave UC the 26-24 game victory.

Set 4: UC 27, URI

  • Bearcats raced out to a 14-7 lead, due in part to three kills by Hill.
  • Cincinnati unleashed its offense for seven consecutive points on three kills and a handful of errors by the Rams for a 21-8 lead.
  • The Rams scored three straight points on a UC match-point, but a Rhode Island service error is what gave UC the 25-16 set win and the 3-1 match victory.

Cincinnati wraps up the Art Carmichael Invitational with a match against the New Jersey Institute of Technology at Noon on Saturday, Sept. 13. It will be the first-ever meeting between UC and NJIT.
