LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team put up a resilient fight but fell short 3-1 (23-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-18) to Appalachian State in the opening match of the Active Ankle Challenge in Louisville, Kentucky.
After dropping the opening set, the Bearcats used a valiant comeback to come from seven points down to win 28-26 and head into the break with the match tied at 1-1.
Emma Roberson (Brooks, Ky./Evansville) paced the Bearcats with a career-high 19 kills and a match-high .567 hitting percentage. The junior had only two attacking errors in 30 attempts on the day.
// Notables
· The Bearcats fall to 2-2 on the season while the Mountaineers improve to a perfect 4-0.
· Roberson's 19 kills was a season-high for any UC player. Her .567 hitting percentage was also a season high for the team when hitting at least 10 kills.
· Senior Jamie Netisingha (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) recorded a match-high 14 digs.
· Redshirt junior Caitlin Ogletree (Montgomery, Texas/Montgomery) made her Bearcats debut when she entered the match in the first set. She collected 30 assists in her first outing with Cincinnati.
· Sophomore Lindsey Dinkelacker (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Louis) recorded her first kills of the season. She finished with four kills and eight digs.
· The match was the first neutral site match of the season for the Bearcats.
· Appalachian State's Emily Corrigan finished the match with 27 kills and 10 digs.
// Set Breakdown
Set 1: ASU 25, UC 23
· The teams played close until a three-point run by the Mountaineers put App State ahead 16-12.
· ASU held the slim lead but the Bearcats responded with three points of their own to tie the score at 22-22. UC used two App State errors and a solo block by junior Morgan Allred (Carrolton, Texas/Hebron) during the run.
· Facing a 24-22 deficit, Cincinnati saved one set-point with an Allred kill but App State hit her eighth kill of the game to give the Mountaineers the win.
Set 2: UC 28, ASU 26
· The Mountaineers raced out to an early 10-3 lead following five straight points, including two UC errors.
· Cincinnati used a three-point scoring run to climb within 16-15 and force an ASU timeout. An App State attacking error on the other side of the break pushed the teams into a 16-16 tie.
· With the score tied at 17-all, the Mountaineers scored two to take a 19-17 lead.
· Kills by Dinkelacker, Roberson Allred brought UC within 23-22.
· Facing an ASU set point, Dinkelacker hit her second kill of the game for a 24-24 score.
· A Mountaineer service error and a solo block by Roberson gave the Bearcats the 28-26 victory.
Set 3: ASU 25, UC 17
· UC and ASU were tied at 5-5 before a four-point Mountaineer scoring run to put them ahead 9-5.
· Three straight ASU errors put UC within 16-15.
· Appalachian State scored eight of the final nine points to win the set.
Set 4: ASU 25, UC 18
· Appalachian State broke an 8-8 tie with six consecutive points for a 14-8 lead.
· Cincinnati scored five consecutive points to get within 18-23 and force a Mountaineer timeout but ASU closed out the match with a kill and a UC attacking error for the 3-1 win.

"Today we played a really solid Appalachian State team" said head coach Molly Alvey. "They played great in their systems. We played great at times but we need to put together longer periods of good volleyball. Overall, I thought it was a nice match and we have a lot to build on and grow on."

Cincinnati continues play in the Active Ankle Challenge at 7:30 p.m. from Cardinal Arena on the campus of the University of Louisville. The Bearcats face the home Cardinals who crept into the national rankings this week at No. 24. It is the first ranked opponent for Cincinnati since a 3-0 defeat to No. 14 Michigan State on Sept. 21, 2013.
