Junior thrower Macklin Tudor shined at the Akron Pole Vault Convention on Friday night as he shattered the University of Cincinnati's school record in the shot put. Tudor led the Bearcats in 24 personal best performances and 10 performances that rank top 10 in UC's all-time records.
Tudor, who is from Mount Orab, Ohio, recorded his record setting toss of 58' 2.5" with his third throw and eventually won the event. His mark surpasses Troy Cooper's hurl of 56' 8" in 2011, and it also puts him top 15 in the nation. Tudor now holds two school records (men's discus).
The junior thrower also claimed fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 53' 8.5", which ranks ninth in UC history. Senior Josh Province won the event with a toss of 57' 1", which puts him third in the Bearcats' records book.
Senior hurdler Bryan Cain also reeled in an individual title by winning the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.07.
Toby Loveridge competed in his first indoor meet for the Bearcats and won the 3,000-meter run. The Brit crossed the line with a time of 8:27.39.
Fellow newcomer Adrian Valles had a quality performance in the pole vault as he tied for fourth with a clearance of 16' 5.25". The mark puts him eighth on the all-time list.
On the women's side, Kenya Woodall had arguably the most impressive night as she won both the 100- and 200-meter dash. The Coatesville, Pennsylvania native moved up on UC's all-time list in the 200 as she sprinted to a time of 24.67, which moves her to third.
Another strength for the Bearcats came in their throwing events. In the shot put, UC finished second through fourth with Mekayla Breland (45' 9.25"), Annette Echikunwoke (45' 2.25") and Leah Heckaman (44' 7.5"). Echikunwoke's mark moves her to seventh in UC history, and Heckaman's puts her eighth.
Frida Akerstrom took point in the weight throw as she recorded a toss of 59' 11.25", which moves her into second in UC's all-time records book. The throw surpassed her previous best by over four feet. Echikunwoke also turned in another solid performance in the weight throw as she finished fourth with a toss of 56' 8.5", which sits fourth in Bearcats' history.
The Bearcats also received first-place finishes from Kelsey Mueller (800-meter run) and Rebecka Abrahamsson (triple jump).
Cincinnati looks to build off their early season success next weekend as they travel to Lexington, Kentucky for the Kentucky Invitational on Jan. 17-18.
