PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) - A strong wind welcomed the PGA Tour to Florida on Thursday. Jim Herman didn't mind one bit.

Herman, who played golf at the University of Cincinnati and has been living in South Florida the last decade, twice saved par from the fairway and kept bogeys off his card for a 5-under 65 and the early lead at the Honda Classic. He was one shot ahead of Brendan Steele, and only 12 other players from the morning wave broke par.

Phil Mickelson wasn't among them. He hit into the water three times over his last eight holes and scratched out a 71. Rory McIlroy, making his first PGA Tour start of the year, got off to a rugged start in the afternoon. The world's No. 1 player hit his first shot out of play and was 3 over at the turn. Herman, meanwhile, was just happy to be playing.

This is the second straight week he thought he was in the tournament, got bumped out based on his low priority ranking, and was playing a Monday qualifier when he got the call in the middle of that Monday round with news that he was back in.

He made the most out of the opportunity at PGA National.

It was so windy that tour officials used a forward tee on par-4 10th hole. Herman still had to hit a big drive and a 4-iron, two good shots that set up an 8-foot birdie. But what saved his rounds were pars. He was in the rough on the 11th hole and chipped out instead of trying to clear the water into the wind, and Herman hit wedge to 15 feet on the fringe and made it for par.

On the 14th, he went left into the trees and couldn't get to the green, so he pitched forward down the fairway and hit another wedge to 8 feet to save par. He also made a 35-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, and went 2 under par over the three closing holes.

A native of Cincinnati, Herman lettered in golf at UC from 1997-2000.
