Freshman Adrian Valles led the University of Cincinnati track & field programs to strong performances on day one of the American Indoor Track & Field Championships by garnering the men's pole vault crown. The men's team finishes the first day in third place with 36 points, while the women sit seventh with 19 points.
// FRESHMAN PHENOM WINS POLE VAULT CROWN
Cincinnati freshman Adrian Valles began the conference meet by winning the men's pole vault with a clearance of 17' 3.75". The pole vaulter becomes the fifth UC athlete to win an indoor league title in that event and the first since Matt Botos won the pole vault at the 1995 Great Midwest Indoor Championships.
// THROWING OUR WEIGHT AROUND
The weight throw was a big event for the women as they finished third through fifth to tally 15 points. Freshman Annette Echikunwoke snatched third with a career best toss of 60' 1". Seniors Monica Phillips and Frida Akerstrom finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
// PAINTING THE PODIUM RED
One of the top events on the men's side was the long jump as Sergio Acera Villanueva and Tariq Sanders finished second and third. Villanueva leapt a collegiate best 24' 1.75", which sits fifth in Bearcats' history, while Sanders soared to a mark of 24' 0.75", which is a lifetime best and is tied for sixth in UC history.

The Bearcats had seven athletes run in preliminary races on Friday and earn spots in the finals of their respective events on Saturday.

In the women's 400-meter dash, junior Kenya Woodall clocked in at 54.03 to break her own school record of 54.07, which she set last season at the conference championships. Cincinnati now has broken six school record this indoor season.

UC freshman Alex Bloom completed the first day of the heptathlon with 2,751 points and sits in fourth place.

The Bearcats are back in action tomorrow morning with the men's heptathlon at 9 a.m. Field events are slated to begin at 9:45 a.m. while running events start at 12:10 p.m.
