The University of Cincinnati men's golf team starts its spring season at the Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday General Hackler Championship on March 9-10 at the Dunes Club (par 72; 7,223 yards) in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The 15-team field will play 36 holes on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Eleven of the 15 team competing are listed in national polls by Golf Week Magazine and GolfStat led by No. 25 North Florida and No. 40 East Tennessee State. Other teams joining Cincinnati in the event include Charleston Southern, Charlotte, host Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Iowa State, Jacksonville, Kent State, Middle Tennessee State, NC State, North Texas, USC Upstate and Winthrop.
"The field is outstanding and the course is new to us," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "Anytime you go to a new venue it presents challenges just because you only have one practice round and you are trying to establish a game plan on how to play the course."
The Bearcats will be represented by seniors Baxter Reeves(Montgomery, Ala./Brewbaker Tech/Central Alabama CC), Jared Howard(Dublin, Ohio/JeromeHighSchool) and John Michael O'Toole(Pinson, Ala./Pinson Valley High School/Central Alabama CC) as well as sophomore Jared O'Kelley(Canton,Ga./Creekview High School) and freshman Davis Baxter(Nolensville, Tenn./Ravenwood High School).
"The team is excited to get back into action," Martin said. "Some of the guys realize that it's their last semester of college golf and there is a sense of urgency. We're going to focus on the things that help us play well. We control our own destiny."
O'Toole led UC with a 73.76 stroke average during the fall season that saw the Bearcats post three Top 3 finishes, including a team win at the Bearcat Invitational on Oct. 6-7. But after a ninth place finish at the Pinetree Intercollegiate and a 10th-place showing at the Intercollegiate at the Grove ended the season on a sour note, Martin says the team is refocused for the spring campaign.
"The fall was a great learning experience for our program in general," Martin said. "It was the first time we played a semester with expectations.
"During the offseason I've seen tremendous energy and a restored hunger with this group. The thing that made our season so successful last year was our players competed with a chip on their shoulder, wanting to prove something to themselves. I see an eagerness to want to compete and get after it again. That's what we've got to get back to."
