Senior John Michael O'Toole (Pinson, Ala./Pinson Valley High School/Central Alabama CC) tied for second with a career-best 3-under par 70-68-72=210 Sunday to help lead the University of Cincinnati men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana.
O'Toole started the final round slowly at the IU Golf Course (par 71; 6,813 yards) with five bogies on his first 12 holes before rallying with an eagle on the par-5 first hole and a birdie on the par-4 second hole to finish the day at 1-over 72. He entered Sunday tied for first after recording his best two rounds of the spring season on Saturday with a 1-under 70 in the morning round and 3-under 68 in the afternoon's second round. He finished the event with 34 par scores, 10 birdies and an eagle.
O'Toole tied with Wisconsin's Jack Watson (3-under 68-70-72=210), three strokes behind tournament medalist Jose Montano of Xavier at 6-under 71-67-69=207.
O'Toole's second-place finish is his highest as a Bearcat. He tied for seventh place during the fall season with 69-73-75=217 at the Pinetree Intercollegiate.
"He is an explosive golfer when he is able to avoid double bogies," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "When he stays within the game plan he's going to do well because he's very talented at making birdies."
The Bearcats registered their best three-round score of the spring season, surging from fifth place to second by day's end at 9-over 287-288-286=861. UC finished eight strokes behind team winner Wisconsin (1-over 286-279-288=853).
"We're a good team when we don't make foolish mistakes," Martin said. "We were able to hang around all day. We weren't perfect but we're getting better every day. It's a credit to the guys on this team that they have been able to work on eliminating mistakes."
UC sophomore Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) climbed nine spots to tie for 11th place after recording his best round of the event on Sunday, a 1-over 70, to finish at 1-over 72-72-70=214. The three-round score is his best as a sophomore and ranks one stroke behind his top score as a Bearcat. He carded a 75-69-69=213 at the USF Invitational last spring.
UC senior Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) vaulted six places in the standings on Sunday, tying for 22nd place at 72-74-72=218. The finish is his second straight in the top 25 after tying for 11th place (70-72-70=212) at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship a week ago.
Bearcat sophomore Brennen Walsh (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder High School) tied for 35th place (73-75-72=220) after carding his best round of the spring season on Sunday at 1-over 72. Senior Baxter Reeves (Montgomery, Ala./Brewbaker Tech/Central Alabama CC) tied for 57th place at 74-74-78=226.
