University of Cincinnati senior John Michael O'Toole (Pinson, Ala./Pinson Valley High School/Central Alabama CC) carded a second-round 3-under par 69 to tie for 19th place at even par 144 on the first day of competition at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Indiana.

O'Toole was 3-over 75 after the morning's opening round but posted five birdies in the afternoon round, including a 2-under on his last six holes of the day. His second-round 69 marks his second-best single-round score of the spring season behind only a 68 registered last week in the second round of the Hoosier Invitational.

Cincinnati enters Sunday's final round tied for ninth place with Toledo with an identical 9-over 292-293=585. Sixth-ranked Illinois leads the 15-team event at 32-under 276-268=544.

Junior Emerson Newsome (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek High School), playing in his first tournament of the spring, ranks tied for 28th place at 2-over 72-74=146. Fellow senior Baxter Reeves (Montgomery, Ala./Brewbaker Tech/Central Alabama CC) is 64th at 74-79=153.

"We had a solid day overall," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "We still had a day of big number holes though with five double bogies and two triples. That's 16 shots we can't afford to give up. Tomorrow is a new day and we must come out fighting."

Final-round play on the Kampen Course (par 72, 7,465 yards) at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex begins Sunday at 8:45 a.m. ET. Live scoring and results are available at BirdieFire.com.
