Two University of Cincinnati track & field standouts punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday at the East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Florida.
// WOODALL QUALIFIES FOR THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Junior sprinter Kenya Woodall garnered a 12th-place finish in the 400-meter dash to earn her way to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She ran a 52.70 to finish fifth in her heat but advanced on time. The Coatesville, Pennsylvania native is the first female UC athlete to qualify for the 400-meter dash outdoors. Woodall has a chance to double-up on Saturday as she runs in the 200-meter dash final. She heads into the final seeded 10th after running 23.42 in the prelims.
// VALLES PUNCHES HIS TICKET TO EUGENE
Freshman Adrian Valles punched his ticket to Track Town USA by also finishing 12th in the pole vault. The Spaniard cleared 17' 2.75" and stopped vaulting because it was good enough to advance him to the championship meet. Valles is the first UC male athlete to reach both the indoor and outdoor championships in the same season since 1977 when Jim Schnur and Wayne Mason did it.
// SANDERS ADVANCES TO FINALS
Senior hurdler Je'Rica Sanders advanced to the NCAA East Preliminary finals in the 100-meter hurdles after finishing 15th in the prelims. Sanders clocked in at 13.30, which breaks her own school record that she set just two weeks ago at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
