CINCINNATI-- Two days after becoming the University of Cincinnati's first first-round draft selection in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) earned a pair of yearly awards from national baseball organizations. The junior was named Second Team All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and First Team All-Mideast Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
Happ was one of 58 student-athletes named to the 18th Annual NCBWA All-America teams. He is one of 13 conference Players of the Year represented on the list and one of nine players who were first round draft selections. It is his third All-America selection this season after previously being named to both the Louisville Slugger Collegiate Baseball and College Sports Madness second teams.
He also was selected to the first team of the All-Mideast Region team by the ABCA, making him eligible for the association's All-America team which will be announced on Saturday, June 13. The teams are voted on by members of the ABCA.
Happ was named the 2015 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and finished the season as the league leader in batting average (.369), slugging percentage (.672), on-base percentage (.492), total bases (133) and walks (46).
He was picked by the Chicago Cubs as the ninth overall selection in Monday's First-Year Player Draft, becoming the first player in program history to be selected in the first round.
