CINCINNATI - Perfect Game magazine released its 2015 All-America teams on Tuesday, naming University of Cincinnati baseball player Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) to its first team. It is the seventh All-America honor of the season for Happ and the third First Team selection.
Happ was previously named First Team All-America by D1Baseball.com and the ABCA and was added to the second teams by Baseball America, the NCBWA, Louisville Slugger Collegiate Baseball and College Sports Madness. He also was named a First Team Capital One Academic All-American by CoSIDA.
The award comes after Happ was selected as the ninth overall pick in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago Cubs, making him the highest overall pick in program history. He has since signed a contract and is currently playing with the Eugene Emeralds, the team's Single A Short Season club.
The first team selection makes him just the third UC player to earn the highest All-America honor and the first since Billy Wolf did so in 1965. Overall, he is the ninth player in program history to be named an All-American.
Happ was named the 2015 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and finished the season as the league leader in batting average (.369), slugging percentage (.672), on-base percentage (.492), total bases (133) and walks (46).
