University of Cincinnati junior Chad Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome High School) carded a school-record 8-under par 64 Monday to rank second after 36 holes at 8-under 72-64=136 at the Fossum Memorial at Point O'Woods Golf Course and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
Howard, playing unattached from the Bearcats' team score, accounted for eight birdies and an eagle in the afternoon's round, surpassing former UC player Zach Bates' school-best single-round score of 65 set in the first round of the 2010 Bearcat Invitational.
"Chad had a spectacular round," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He has been hitting the ball well all season and today, he put together one of the best putting rounds of his career in the afternoon."
Junior Brennen Walsh (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder High School) posted a career-best 4-under 68 in the first round and ranks fifth at 4-under par 68-72=140. Two other Bearcats also registered below-par scores after 36 holes. Junior Jared O'Kelley (Canton, Ga./Creekview High School) is sixth at 3-under 72-69=141 while fellow junior Blake Hamilton (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) is two strokes back in seventh place at 1-under 72-71=143.
"Having three guys shoot below par scores for us after 36 holes is a huge positive," Martin said. "We're getting closer. We've been putting a lot of emphasis on our short game recently and how we play around the greens. When we put ourselves in good position, we need to take care of our opportunities."
Michigan State's Sam Weatherhead leads the 25-player event at 11-under 68-65=133.
Overall, the Bearcats posted their best two team rounds of the fall season on Monday, registering a 4-under 285-287=572. Michigan State leads the four-team event after carding a 22-under 279-275=554. The Spartans' B team is third at 16-over 297-295=592 while Nebraska ranks fourth at 22-over 299-299=598.
Final-round action begins Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET. Live scoring is not available for this tournament.
