University of Cincinnati sophomore Davis Baxter (Nolensville, Tenn./Ravenwood High School) carded his best round of the fall season at 2-under par 70 Monday to tie two other players for second place after the first round of the Mountaineer Intercollegiate at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia.

The event, originally schedule for 54 holes, was reduced to 36 holes after frost on the course delayed the opening round by several hours. Final-round action begins Tuesday with a shotgun start set for 9 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.

Davis registered four birdies on the day and moved to 4-under after 11 holes before a pair of bogeys on his last five holes resulted in his 2-under score.

"I'm really proud of Davis," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He played with a lot of confidence today. He's getting more and more comfortable off the tee. He drove the ball very well today and played a great round."

Baxter was one of only six players in the 79-player field to post a score below par Monday. He is tied with Brett Rinker of Bowling Green State and Otto Black of Toledo one stroke behind Marshall's Clark Robinson, who carded a 3-under 69.

As a team, the Bearcats are tied with Bowling Green State for fourth at 11-over 299. Fifteenth-ranked Penn State leads the 14-team event at 6-over 294, followed by UConn at 7-over 295 and Miami (Ohio) at 10-over 298.

"We're not very far away from taking the next step," Martin said. "We've got to play with a little more confidence or swagger. Even though our top player didn't have his best round today others stepped up and kept us in contention. That's a positive sign for us."
