CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's basketball team rolled to an 81-60 win in its final exhibition match of the season on Saturday afternoon in Fifth Third Arena. The Bearcats, 2-0 in exhibition play, open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. against Western Carolina inside Fifth Third Arena.
Kevin Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) led the charge for UC with 19 points, including a 5-of-6 performance from 3-point range. The junior was 4-of-4 from beyond the arc in the team's first exhibition against Grand Valley State on Nov. 4, combining for nine three-point baskets in preseason action.
The Bearcats dominated the points in the paint, scoring 30 to Bellarmine's 15, and were led down low by sophomore Quadri Moore (Linden, N.J./Linden) who totaled 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Sophomore Glary Clark (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) chipped in eight points for UC and added a team-high three blocks.
The Bearcats held a slim 25-19 lead with 8:52 remaining in the opening half before gaining separation with a 12-2 scoring run that spanned 3:24. The run was started with a jumper by junior Troy Caupain (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and a dunk by Johnson before a pair of Bellarmine free throws kept the Knights in it at 27-21. Cincinnati shut the door from there, scoring on a fast break layup by Caupain and back-to-back three-point baskets by Johnson to open a 35-21 lead with 4:46 remaining in the half.
Caupain scored all of his 11 points in the first-half, shooting 5-of-6 from the field to go with four assists and two steals.
An 8-0 second-half scoring run gave the Bearcats a 29-point lead, their largest of the game, with 7:36 remaining in the match. Johnson hit a pair of free throws and connected on a 3-point basket before Clark finished two easy buckets for a 71-42 UC advantage.
The Knights responded with eight straight points, all by Rusty Troutman, to get within 71-50, but the Bearcats held Bellarmine to just two field goals the rest of the way.
The second half was led by Moore, who scored all 11 of his points after the break, and Johnson who also chipped in 11 of his 19 in the second stanza.
Cincinnati forced the Knights into 18 turnovers in the game, after pressuring GVSU into 17 mistakes on Tuesday. Against BU, the turnovers were good for 22 UC points and 20 fast break points to give the Bearcats the advantage.
