BLOOMINGTON, IN - The University of Cincinnati track and field program closed out its third meet of the indoor season on Saturday afternoon at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind., and, for the third week in a row, Annette Echikunwoke upped the school-record distance in the weight throw. The sophomore lead the way once again as the Bearcats posted 13 total personal-bests on Saturday while adding two marks to the program's all-time Top 10 chart.
// WOMEN'S RESULTS
- The name Annette Echikunwoke and the words "school record" seem to be inseparable, at least through the first three weeks of competition indoors as the sophomore, for the third-consecutive meet, has reset the school record in the women's weight throw. After entering the year at No. 2 on UC's all-time Top 10, Echikunwoke proceeded to break that record at the Kentucky Invitational (20.05m) before raising the standard last week to 20.31m and then to 20.46m today. That toss, which placed her fourth in the meet, is currently the No. 9 mark on the NCAA lists.
- In the same event, Monica Phillips also made changes to the record book as she hit a distance of 18.39m (60-04.00) to raise her one spot to No. 3 all-time at UC. With that mark, she becomes just the third Bearcats woman to surpass the 60-foot barrier in the event.
- Staying in the field, three women's pole vaulters competed in the event and all three posted season-best clearances. Alyssa McBride led the way as she cleared 3.87m (12-08.50) while freshman Brooke Catherine (3.72m/12-02.50) and Sadie Brass (3.57m/11-08.50) posted collegiate personal-bests. Following the meet, the updated conference lists have two Bearcats among the Top 8 with McBride sitting fourth and Catherine seventh.
- The 800m run produced a pair of personal bests, including Sammy Hentz and Madison Dunlap. Hentz lowered her time by 0.04 seconds to run 2:20.74 while Dunlap bested her previous best by two seconds to 2:22.34. Right behind her was Cassidy Carey, who ran a collegiate personal best of 2:25.95.
- In the 400m dash, Deanna Gesicki improved her time, lowering her best by 0.01 to 58.26 while Sylvana Ross followed suit to drop her best time by 0.76 seconds to 1:00.42. Jada Grant was the top finisher in the event for UC, running 57.13.
- The final PR came in the mile run where Lianne Masquelier dropped six seconds off her best time to run 5:15.57 and finish 18th overall. Tes Corea (5:14.45) and Cassidy Carey (5:18.22) also were in the race.
- Did You Know... that, of the Top 6 marks on the women's NCAA high jump descending order list, not only are the Bearcats one of two programs to have a pair of student-athletes with those high marks, but UC's entries from Loretta Blaut and Erika Hurd are the No. 1 and No. 2 collegiate marks among American-born athletes? So far, Blaut is tied for third nationally with a clearance of 1.86m while Hurd, who tallied her mark Friday night, stands sixth in the NCAA at 1.84m.
// MEN'S RESULTS
- The men's mile run had two entrants from UC and also had two personal-best times at the end of the race. Ian Silver, who finished 18th overall, clocked in at 4:17.13 to lower his all-time best by 7.07 seconds. Just behind him was Dan Huben in 21st with a personal-best 4:18.22.
- Mykel Chambers, the lone UC finalist in the short sprints, took on a fast field in the finals and improved upon his standing from one day earlier, today claiming seventh overall in 7.00.
- The field events gave UC a pair of personal bests, too, with Ben Wollenslegel clearing 1.95m (6-04.75) in the high jump to post his best indoor clearance while John Zedella marked at 16.17m (53-00.75) to set a new best and finish ninth overall. The finals appearance for Zedella capped a strong weekend for the freshman as he reached the finals in both throws in the same meet for the first time this year (made the finals in the shot put at the Gladstein Invitational one week ago).
The Bearcats will divide their ranks next weekend as they will send athletes to one of two meets, both running Friday and Saturday. A large contingent will travel to the Big Apple to compete in the Armory Invitational at the Armory in New York City while the remainder of the week's competitors will head to South Bend, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational.
