HOUSTON -- Jacqueline Keire set a school record in the 50 freestyle, capturing the individual title to highlight day two of the American Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.
As a team, the University of Cincinnati saw both genders move up one spot in the team standings.
// KEIRE CAPTURES NUMBER SIX IN 50 FREESTYLE
Keire (Burlington, Ont./Nelson) won her sixth career conference title in the 50 freestyle, finishing with a finals time of 22.31 which was good for a school record. That followed a morning preliminary time of 22.63.
It marked the first title of this year's championships for Keire, who won three last year to go along with Female Outstanding Swimmer of the league meet. She won two titles in 2014 as a freshman.
The men's 50 freestyle saw two Bearcats in the evening A-final. Connor Davis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) clocked in at 20.24 to place fourth, just ahead of teammate Nick Lafleur (Montreal, Que./Loyola) in fifth at 20.47.
// 500 FREESTYLE
The Bearcats had a pair of women in the 500 freestyle championship heat. Sara Wanasek (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) placed fourth in 4:52.86, while Sydney King (Granville, Ohio/Granville/Western Kentucky) was sixth in 4:55.16. Taylor Myszka (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) won the consolation final, clocking in at 4:54.42, a time which would have been good for fifth in the A-final.
On the men's side, Chris Bready (Missouri City, Texas/Lawrence E. Elkins) finished the 500 free in 4:26.86 to place seventh.
// 200 INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
The women's 200 individual medley saw one of the breakout stories of the season continue for UC, as sophomore Samantha Wheatley (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) captured a runner-up finish. She followed-up a 2:03.04 prelim time with a 2:02.39 mark in the evening final. Teammate Andrea Bartel (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) was fifth in 2:03.65.
The Bearcats placed three men in the championship heat of the 200 IM, with Brandon Keller (Charlotte, N.C./Olympic) leading the way by finishing fourth in 1:49.79. He was followed by Tyler Roehr (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) in fifth at 1:50.33 and Todd Brannon (Duluth, Ga./Norcross/Colorado School of Mines) in sixth at 1:51.38.
// 200 FREESTYLE RELAY
The women's team of Katherine Gob (Louisville, Ky./Ballard), Amanda Deller (Fairfield, Ohio/McAuley), Lindsey Niehaus (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) and Keire placed fourth in the final event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay. The finished in 1:32.54 with Keire swimming the fastest leg at 22.05.
The men placed third with Connor Davis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson), Eitan Holder (Caracas, Venezuela), Dmytro Turkin (Kirvoy Rog, Ukraine) and Lafleur. They clocked in at 1:20.84, with Lafleur's anchor as the fastest leg at 20.03.
// DAY THREE PREVIEW
Day three in Houston begins with preliminary swims at 11 a.m. ET and the finals at 7 p.m. ET. Events include men's three-meter diving, the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back and 400 Medley Relay.
Keire will again be looking to defend a title, as she has won the 200 freestyle the last two seasons.
