University of Cincinnati senior Emerson Newsome shot a final-round 4-over par 76 to finish tied for 22nd place at 9-over 74-75-76=225 Tuesday at the Lone Star Invitational hosted at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72, 7,247 yards) in San Antonio, Texas.
Emerson has finished as the Bearcats top performer in both of Cincinnati's spring tournaments in 2016. He tied for seventh with a 5-over 73-73-75=221 at the Colleton River Collegiate in Bluffton, S.C. on March 8.
"Emerson continues his solid play," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "I know he didn't finish off the tournament the way that he wanted to but once again he was in position."
Ohio State's Tee-k Kelly won medalist honors in the 100-player event, carding a 5-under 68-72-71=211.
As a team, the Bearcats finished tied for 12th place in the 17-team field, registering a 25-over 300-308-313=921. New Mexico claimed the team title, posting a 13-over 293-286-298=877.
"Overall, I'm disappointed in our performance today," Martin said. "Too many mistakes that were unforced. Our execution didn't give us a chance to play well. The golf course won this week. Now, we've got to start preparing for Old Waverly and Mississippi State."
The Bearcats compete at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, Apr. 4-5, in West Point, Miss.
