Echikunwoke Shatters PR in Hammer to Pace UC

Echikunwoke Shatters PR in Hammer to Pace UC

March 25, 2016

Day One Results (Raleigh Relays) | Complete Results (Hurricane Twilight)

CINCINNATI - The 2016 outdoor season got off to a flying start for the University of Cincinnati track and field program as the Bearcats sent athletes to a pair of meets in which they combined to record 30 personal-bests, nine of which rank among the program's all-time Top 10. Most of the Bearcats took part in the one-day Hurricane Twilight in Coral Gables, Fla., while a smaller contingent participated in the first of two days at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.

Among those nine marks added to UC's all-time Top 10 was one school record that came at the hands of Annette Echikunwoke. The sophomore, who broke the indoor weight throw record five times this season, wasted no time in claiming the hammer crown as she blasted her own PR by over 33-feet. She was one of many Bearcats there performed well in their first outdoor meet of the year as the team took part in its annual Spring Break trip to the Southeast.

Despite a limited roster, including no distance runners, the Bearcats women - ranked No. 52 in the preseason rankings - scored 113.0 points to finish third in the six-team meet. UC's point total was just five points off No. 21 Miami's runner-up total of 118.0 while No. 1 LSU won the event with 168.5 points. Bethune-Cookman (69.5), Florida Atlantic (65.0) and Florida International (59.0) rounded out the team scoring. On the men's side, No. 4 LSU won the event with 152.0 points and was followed by Miami (129.0), B-C (99.0), FIU (79.0), UC (79.0) and FAU (4.0).

// WOMEN'S RESULTS
at Hurricane Twilight (Coral Gables, Fla.)
- Much as she did indoors, Echikunwoke got the ball rolling on the outdoor season in a big way as she won a pair of events, including the hammer throw and shot put, while tying for fourth in the discus. In the first event of the day, Echikunwoke continued her trend by smashing a record, this time destroying her PR in the hammer throw by over 33' to win the event with a best of 59.97m (196-09). The sophomore, who entered the year not among the program's all-time Top 10 and with a best of 163-04, jumped all the way to the top of the chart, bettering the previous record by nearly 10'. Her toss of 43.10m (141-05) in the discus also was a PR while her toss of 14.98m (49-01.75) won the shot put.
- Staying in the throws, Leah Heckaman collected big points for the team on the day as she took second in the shot put (14.65m/48-00.75) while tying for fourth in the discus with Echikunwoke. Monica Phillips, the previous record holder in the hammer throw, took third overall with a toss of 56.00m (183-09), just off her PR.
- The pole vault also provided a bit of history as rookie Brooke Catherine cleared a best of 4.00m (13-01.50) to finish third overall and become just the sixth Bearcats woman to clear the 4-meter mark outdoors. In the same event, Alyssa McBride cleared 4.15m (13-07.25) to take second in the meet and moved up to No. 4 in UC history at the same time.
- Loretta Blaut cleared 1.78m (5-10.00) to take fourth in the high jump and tie her PR, which stands at the No. 5 mark all-time at UC. Erika Hurd cleared the same height to take third in the event (on misses).
- Javette Lee raced to a time of 55.92 in the 400m dash to place fifth overall while also posting the No. 10 time in UC history. Rebecka Abrahamsson, who ran a PR in the 200m, jumped to 5.76m (18-10.75) in the long jump to better her PR and the No. 8 mark all-time at UC.

at Raleigh Relays (Raleigh, N.C.)
- Alexis Anton and Meg Westerheide paced the women in Raleigh as both clocked times that rank among the program's all-time Top 10 in the 1,500m run. Anton ran 4:38.08 to finish 25th overall and turn-in the fifth-fastest time in UC history while Westerheide followed in 41st place at 4:41.23, the sixth-fastest in Bearcats history.
- In the 3,000m steeplechase, Hannah Christ lowered her best time to 11:12.94 to finish 26th overall in the race. That time stands as the seventh-best all-time at UC.
- Kellsa Mbah recorded personal-bests in both events she entered on the day. In the invitational section of the long jump, Mbah posted a best of 5.71m (18-08.75) to finish tied for eighth overall and missing the program's all-time Top 10 by 1cm. On the track, she raced to a PR of 12.25 to finish 36th in the 100m dash.

// MEN'S RESULTS
at Hurricane Twilight (Coral Gables, Fla.)
- Colt Robinson put together a solid competition for the men in Miami as he not only won the pole vault competition, but also added his name to the school's list with his clearance of 5.10m (16-08.75). That mark places him seventh all-time at UC on a list that has seen just three names added to it since 2014. In the same event, Nathan Alexander (fourth) and Ben Wollenslegel (fifth) scored for the team with Wollenslegel clearing 4.30m (14-01.25) in his first outdoor pole vault competition.
- Sprinters Kelvin Williams and Jaashir Morris had strong days for the men, too, as both scored in their respective events. Williams ran PR's in both the 100m dash (11.53) and 110m hurdles (14.94) to finish seventh and fifth, respectively, while Morris ran a PR 49.75 in the 400m dash (fourth place) before taking second overall in the 400m hurdles (54.61).
- Freshman John Zedella competed in a trio of throwing events and scored points for the team in all three. He placed sixth overall in the shot put before taking seventh overall in both the hammer and the discus events.

at Raleigh Relays (Raleigh, N.C.)
- Ryan Greene posted the only PR of the day for the men in Raleigh as he clocked in at 50.12 in the 400m dash to finish 55th overall.
- Dan Huben (15th) and Ian Silver (17th) posted Top 20 finishes in the 3,000m steeplechase, running 9:22.38 and 9:24.25, respectively, while Seamus Collins was 18th in the 1,500m run in 3:56.06.

Several Bearcats will compete on Saturday in Raleigh to round out the weekend.
