Former University of Cincinnati men's soccer player Emmanuel Appiah made is professional debut over the weekend, appearing for the Charlotte Independence of the United Soccer League.

Appiah came on to play 14 minutes in the season-opener for Charlotte, a 1-0 home loss to Louisville City FC. Charlotte hosts Harrisburg City Islanders on Saturday, April 2, before Appiah returns to Clifton on Saturday, April 9, when Independence takes on FC Cincinnati in FCC's inaugural home match at Nippert Stadium.

Appiah was second team All-American Athletic Conference and second team All-Ohio as a senior in 2015 before being selected by the Colorado Rapids in the first round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. He posted 25 career points in 65 matches for UC, including a career-best 16 points (five goals, six assists) as a senior.

The Westerville, Ohio, native is not alone in USL. All-American Omar Cummings is on the FC Cincinnati roster, while Alejandro Garcia is a member of Orlando City B. Neither Cummings nor Garcia saw action on the opening weekend of the USL season.
