University of Cincinnati senior men's golfer Emerson Newsome is tied with seven players for 14th place after an opening-round 1-over par 73 Saturday at the Hoosier Invitational in Columbus, Indiana.
Newsome, who registered three birdies and parred 11 other holes, sits three strokes behind tournament leader Peter Webb of Valparaiso, who carded a 2-under 70 on the day. Fellow Bearcat Blake Hamilton ranks tied for 22nd place at 2-over 74.
Originally scheduled for 54 holes, the 13-team tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to frigid playing conditions at Otter Creek Golf Course (par 72, 7,199 yards). Saturday's high temperature climbed only to 35 degrees with a wind chill that made it feel like 25 degrees. Temperatures are predicted to rise into the low 40s for Sunday's final-round action. Tee times are slated to start at 9 a.m. ET.
Purdue, who entered the event listed 33rd nationally according to GolfStat rankings, leads the team standings following its opening round 3-over 291. Cincinnati is tied with Toledo for 10th place at 13-over 301.
