University of Cincinnati senior men's golfer Emerson Newsome tied with two other players for second place, carding a final-round 4-under par 68 to finish at 3-under 73-68=141 Sunday at the Hoosier Invitational at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Indiana.
Newsome tied Purdue's Luis Fernando Barco (72-69=141) and Xavier's Jose Montano (74-67=141) to finish one stroke behind tournament medalist Patrick Flavin of Miami (Ohio), who carded a 4-under 72-68=140.
Newsome's final-round 68 marked the third-lowest round of his collegiate career and featured five birdies on the day, including four on the front nine, to go with 12 par scores. With the result, Newsome has registered three top-10 finishes this spring season, tying for 10th at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship (2-over 218) and tying for seventh at the Colleton River Collegiate (5-over 221). The second-place finish marks Newsome's best tournament result since winning the Old Waverly event as a freshman in 2013.
"We're very happy for Emerson," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "With three top-10 finishes this spring, he's definitely playing the best golf of his career right now."
Purdue edged Miami (Ohio) on the second hole of a playoff to win the team title. The Boilermakers (291-287=578) and RedHawks (297-281=578) finished the 2-over par after 36 holes to force the extra play. Cincinnati ended the event in eighth at 16-over 301-291=592.
"It's been too long since we were able to put three good rounds together as a team," Martin said. "Overall, we continue to beat ourselves with unforced errors."
Originally scheduled for 54 holes, the 13-team tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to frigid playing conditions on Saturday.
